Excerpt from The Long Night by Lucy Felthouse:

I’m prepared for pretty much anything on my way to my next-door neighbor’s house for her Halloween party. Loulou is well known across north London for her wild, extravagant events, a few of which I’ve had the good fortune to be a part of—they’re always good fun. So I’m expecting something spectacular—she wouldn’t let me help, or even have a sneak peek at the decorations, so whatever she’s gone for will be a complete surprise to me.

The nearest streetlamp to our houses is providing just enough light to show off her outdoor decorations. I smile as I push open her fake-cobweb-covered front gate, duck as a plastic bat swoops toward my head, then make my way up the garden path, which is lined with creatively carved pumpkins, the tealights nestled inside each helping to illuminate the way to the door.

For all intents and purposes, I’m walking through a graveyard. Headstones in varying states of decay litter the grass. Noises ring out periodically—the hoot of an owl, the howl of a wolf, the yowl of a cat. There’s even a dry ice machine secreted somewhere, as a sinister, low-lying fog hovers over the ground.

I jump and gasp as I pass a large tree to find a decrepit, bloodstained zombie grinning at me from behind its trunk. Tutting, then chuckling at my own silliness, I mount the three steps up to the porch, where more of the same greets me, as well as some macabre smiling skulls, blood dripping from their mouths and spiders crawling from their eye sockets. It’s great, it really is, but there’s nothing unusual about any of it. This is Loulou we’re talking about—I’m waiting for the ‘wow’ factor, that extra something she’s thrown in to make her party an event that’ll be talked about for weeks, maybe even months, to come.

A sign with Gothic blood-red print is fixed to the door.

PARTY THIS WAY. ENTER IF YOU DARE.

Obviously, I dare. With a roll of my eyes, I depress the door handle—which has a large plastic spider hanging off it—and step inside. It’s only a few minutes past the official start time for the party, so it’s still pretty quiet. I’m fine with that—it gives me the opportunity to have a good look around at what Loulou has done with the décor before it gets too busy, too heaving with bodies. Live ones, that is. The dead ones dotted around the place don’t seem to care one way or the other.

I don’t bother announcing my presence to my neighbor—we’ll find each other before long. Instead, I immediately start exploring, exchanging the occasional polite nod with other early partygoers as we pass. The scent of pumpkin spice hangs in the air. So far, so typical—more cobwebs, spiders, pumpkins, skulls, bats, black cats, ghosts, witches, zombies, black floaty material draped everywhere, creepy music…

Then something catches my eye. Toward the back of what is usually Loulou’s enormous living room—the properties in this area, including mine, are huge—is a sectioned-off area. A partition, designed to look like an old stone wall. It’s dark, gloomy, spooky. I love it. And that’s before I notice the sign affixed to the arched doorway embedded in the wall.

THE VAMPIRE’S LAIR

A snort escapes me, and I quickly look around to make sure nobody noticed. I’m alone, thankfully—probably the others are diving into the drinks and snacks which are most likely laid out in the dining room, getting their hands on all the best stuff before other people arrive.

I open the door carefully, since I don’t know how sturdy this whole shebang is, and I don’t want to wreck it—Loulou’ll kill me—and enter, eager to find out exactly what Loulou thinks a vampire lair looks like.

You’d think she’d have an idea, really, given she lives next door to one.

Would serenading be enough to convince a mate they were meant to be?

Cole Burns doesn’t suffer the cold or feeling the holiday spirit, but dreams of having a family by thirty, preferably with two or three children, are slowly fading into the fog of winter. It’s a sad, sad situation he cannot seem to escape.

For John Michael Diamond, being CEO of Diamond Corporation equates to never finding the perfect mate to share his nest. In fact, it’s next to impossible. Through a twist of fate, he discovers his mate not only lives nearby but also on his family’s estate.

Cole never thought he’d fall for such a crazy, insanely gorgeous rich guy, and yet here he was, wrapped in shifter eagle who serenades him with love songs. This was going to be an interesting Christmas.

I grew up listening to folk tales my father and nannies told either to entertain us children or to send home a message. These narratives I kept with me and finally, I wrote them down in a journal way back when I kept one. Going through junk led to a long forgotten box and in it was the journal. Reading the stories of romance, science fiction and horror I had taken time to put to paper, brought to light that these were tales I never met in my readings.

The tales I write are fictional but all of them are based on what I grew up with and still dream about. That they have an M/M twist is simply for my pleasure. And I hope, yours as well.

A restaurant owner who can’t cook meets a chef who just happens to be a vampire. Can they each overcome their shameful past and find a recipe for redemption?

Doss Chambers always dreamed of owning a restaurant, but a car crash when he was seventeen put those plans on hold. He’s paid for his mistake, in legal terms, but the guilt he carries weighs heavily on his mind. Nevertheless, Doss is determined to fulfill his dream. He works hard at his family’s market to save whatever money he can and spends every spare minute learning the business of running a restaurant. If only he could cook…

Henri Courtan is the best pastry chef in Paris. Some say it’s an odd choice of profession for a vampire, but after years of self-imposed exile to atone for his violent past, Henri is finally happy to settle down and live his life in peace. When dark secrets come back to haunt him, however, he flees to New York. A progressive clan of vampires take him in, and Henri suddenly finds himself charge of feeding dozens of vampires accustomed to eating human food. He’s glad to be cooking again, keeping busy, until a man arrives with a delivery. When Henri opens the door, he quickly realizes that his man might offer much more than groceries.

Neither man is sure of the other’s feelings, until a shared culinary experience reveals a physical hunger that can no longer be ignored. The flames of passion are lit, but both men need to forgive themselves before they can share their hearts.

Kazy Reed grew up on a small island off the Maine coast. At the age of sixteen, she announced to her parents that she was going to move to Denmark for six months as an exchange student. That trip changed her life, and sparked her love of travel, languages, and art history.

After graduating from college with a degree in Art History, she moved back to the island where she began to write short stories. When she was introduced to gay erotic fiction, the seed was planted and she never looked back. Kazy now lives near the coast of Maine, with her very understanding husband and two ridiculously precocious children.

Throwback Thursday – The Halloween Edition

🎃 Happy Halloween! 🎃

Enjoy an excerpt from Lost Time, still one of my all time faves, even after all these years. This story was inspired by a friend of mine who went on a UK vacation and got lost in Wales. Two very sweet people came to her rescue. But that’s about where the similarities end, from there on, my filthy imagination took over and the delicious Lockhart Munro took shape. And Oh, what a shape he has…

supernatural, paranormal, time-travel, erotic, romance

(I’ve left another extract over on the original * Pick a Genre Already * if you’d like to read some more)

But first, here’s the blurb:

losttime_postcard.jpg

EXCERPT:

“How’s the headache?” Jake asked.

“Mmm, better, thanks. Just have a bit of a sore throat today.”

“Gran says you look a little flushed.”

Hannah chuckled nervously.

Jake’s gran set a bowl of porridge in front of her and sat down to join them.

Hannah took a spoonful of treacle from the fancy little pot and swirled it over the porridge, wondering how to bring up the subject of her missing man. She really should have got his name before she fell asleep. It would make this inquiry a lot easier.

“Um…” She tried the oatmeal. “Do you have…workers—you know, employees that work here—besides you?”

“Nope, there’s just me and Gran. When we need outside help, the neighbors usually pitch in.”

“Huh. Do you rent out rooms?” she fished.

“Nope, only to you.” He chuckled, scraping the last of his breakfast from the bottom of the bowl.

Hannah pinched her lip. “Um, okay, look… Last night, I, uh… My throat was sore, as I said, so I came down here to see if maybe you had some orange juice. I hope you don’t mind,” Hannah rushed. “Um, and I, uh, ran into a man…”

Jake’s Gran shot to her feet and she crossed herself just like she’d done last evening before she’d left Hannah’s room.

“You met a man…down here?” Jake said slowly.

Hannah swallowed and laughed again uneasily. “Yeah, he…um…he was here in the kitchen. He looks just like the guy in the painting in my room.”

Jake’s eyes rounded and his spoon fell noisily to the table as his gran spoke rapidly in Welsh and an overly excited voice. Uneasiness skittered across the back of Hannah’s neck.

“Did he give you a name?” Jake asked. “Gran wants to know.”

“No, I didn’t catch his name. I was hoping you could tell me.”

Jake shook his head. “Nope, I can’t help you.” He stood up from the table and took his bowl to the sink.“You let me know when you’re ready to go to the bus station, Hannah. I’ll gladly take you.”

“But…I was hoping…to stay and…”

Jake shook his head slowly with a skeptical look on his young face. “And hang out with a ghost some more? I doubt that’s what you had in mind for your holiday.”

“A ghost?” She gave a half-assed chuckle, watching Jake intently. “Right, a ghost. Funny. Canadian tourist, right here”—she pointed at her own face—“in haunted old Wales,” she tried to joke, but by the look on his face he didn’t find it funny.

“Look, Hannah, I don’t know what to say. Gran swears he’s here. I’ve never actually seen him, so I don’t really believe it, but I will admit some strange stuff goes on here that defies explanation. If you ran into him last night, I’m sorry that he scared you.”

“He didn’t…scare me… You’re scaring me, to tell the truth. You’re trying to make me believe that…that the guy I”—she almost said ‘fucked’ before she caught herself—“met was a ghost?”

“Well, I guess you should consider yourself lucky that he didn’t frighten you. I’ve gotta go get some work done before you need to leave.” He began to walk out of the room.

Hannah jumped up and gripped his arm, as near hysteria climbed up her sore throat. “The guy, in the portrait. He’s dead?”

“Well, I don’t know. I assume he is. That painting has been here as long as I can remember. It was here when Gran was a child, she told me before. Her family has lived here for generations.”

Hannah began to tremble uncontrollably.

Jake lowered her into a chair. “It’s okay, Hannah. You’ll be all right. I’ll get you out of here. I’ll take you to Swansea and you can just carry on with your trip. Just think of the story you’ll get to tell when you get back to Canada.”

The story she’d get to tell? Who the hell would believe her? Oh, by the way, Cassie, I shagged a ghost while I was in the UK. They’d lock her up and throw away the key for sure. “But…but who is the man in the painting?” She looked at him, needing answers.

“I don’t know. Like I said, it was here. For all we know it is just an artist’s vision and not a real person at all.” He looked over at his gran and shrugged.

Hannah didn’t believe that. He had been real. If he was a—she didn’t even want to think it—a ghost, then he had to have been alive at some point.

Near tears, she covered her mouth. What was going on? She felt that same awful ache of grief she’d experienced upstairs. She couldn’t be so sick and feverish, that she’d hallucinated this whole thing.

Jake bent down and patted her shoulder. “Why don’t you go throw some cool water on your face and pack up your things? I’ll take you to your hotel.”

Hannah swallowed hard and nodded, getting up and stumbling blindly towards the stairs.

She entered the room, keeping her back to the portrait, piling her things into her suitcase without folding them neatly. She went into the bathroom and turned on the faucet, throwing cold water on her face then drying it without even looking into the mirror, afraid that she might see him there.

Hannah had to know. She pulled the collar of her shirt wide and looked down at her breasts. The bruises were still there. What the fuck? Wow, I’ve been ‘used’ by a ghost. Leave it to her to have a relationship with the most unavailable guy around. Oh, wait—he wasn’t a guy at all. She felt light-headed. Jake was right, she needed to get the hell away from here.

Hannah took her toothbrush and hairbrush from the sink, tossed them carelessly into the case, and zipped it up. Hastily, she looked around the room for anything that she might have forgotten.

“Can I help…?”

Hannah jumped a mile at the sound of Jake’s voice.

“I’m sorry,” he apologized. “I just wanted to help with your bags.”

“Thank you,” she whispered. Allowing him to take the two bigger bags, she followed him out, slinging her carry-on over a shoulder. As Hannah passed the painting she had to expend an enormous amount of willpower not to look at it. It was as if it pulled at her, demanding her attention. She ignored it and hurried down the stairs after Jake.

As Hannah reached the bottom of the stairs the floor tilted. The room’s particles whizzed around and she knew he was near. Even though it felt like she was going to pass out or throw up, she bee-lined for the exit. Hannah pulled open the massive door and lunged outside, inhaling deep gulps of cool air into her lungs.

She sat down heavily on the front steps while Jake put her things in the car.

“You ready, Hannah?” he asked, looking down at her.

“Yes.” He reached a hand out to her and she took it gratefully, needing some support—not only physically but emotionally as well.

They drove down the lane. Hannah had already made the decision that she wouldn’t look back. But she did, and almost choked when she saw an old farmhouse. Last night when they’d driven up, it had been a castle. She’d seen it. The lightning had flashed and she’d seen a freakin’ castle. At least that was what she’d thought. Nothing was making sense. As she stared at the old house, she caught sight of movement at the very topmost, octagonal-shaped window in what must be an attic. The pane of glass took on the silvery hue she’d witnessed so many times during the night, as if the house or someone in it were trying to summon her.

Hannah closed her eyes and turned back around in the seat.

Excerpt:

Evie padded in the side door and up the back stairs, hoping to avoid notice.

Footsteps dashed up after her.

“Sweet Sneak.” Roughly, Haskell clamped his arms around her torso. Cheap whiskey laced his breath. While squashing her to his chest, the flintlock he’d tucked into his waistband bumped against her derrière. His hands drifted over her shift, groping. “Fancy finding you creeping.”

Her creeping? What was he doing in the Great House? She stomped down hard, but Haskell was quicker.

She missed his foot. “I’m on an errand for Lord Victor. He won’t tolerate your interference.”

A grizzled-haired, slovenly man, who held a lantern rushed to them. He clicked his tongue. “Not yet, you pudding head. You’ve already gone and got her Ladyship rightly peeved. You want to rile the Head Stitch as well?”

“Reckon not.” Haskell snatched a last squeeze before releasing her.

The point of Evie’s left elbow found his belly.

He chuckled. “I like ‘em feisty, Sweet Sneak.”

Evie hustled past the mercenaries, who apparently had taken to patrolling the Great House. Why? She hadn’t a clue, until she reached the boudoir.

Mutters, the whisper of fabric, and the scritch-scratch of a broom came from inside.

Evie’s stomach tightened. Had Victor awoken? Somehow gotten past her and was even now prepared to do himself harm? No, she would have experienced a surge of emotion from him. Who was with the Maiden?

From the end of the hall, Haskell winked.

She hurried into Victor’s room. Someone coughed in the boudoir.

She crept to the connecting door. Someone shuffled. A broom rustled across wood. The cough sounded again. She turned the knob. It wasn’t locked. She opened the door a crack. A gray-haired figure in a nightshirt blocked her view. Then he shifted and he cocked his head to the side. Henry.

The statue gave off a shimmery glow akin to moonlight. Her lips pressed together tightly as if she saw Evie and refused to acknowledge, much less, greet her. Could Evie be so lucky? Dahlia leaned over the bell-like torso of the Maiden. With the fondness of a lover’s caress, she fingered the coiled braids. Moisture, the Maiden’s stolen energy-turned-to sweat, glistened on her hands.

“Hurry up, girl. We haven’t all night,” Lady Lowell hissed from the chamber’s corner. Behind her, Clive swept.

Dahlia pivoted, putting the awful bruise in Evie’s line of sight. Her tongue darted out and played over the stone. She slurped the viscous delicacy. The blackish stain on Dahlia’s cheek dissipated. Her beauty blossomed into sheer loveliness. Her skin became creamy smooth and luminous, but that sheen was wrong. It held the same malevolence Evie had glimpsed on the Maiden and Victor after the widow’s death.

Henry twitched and jerked in a stiff march as though he wished to leave the boudoir, but had failed to locate an exit. He sidled to the opposite wall, an expression akin to guilt on his countenance.

Her sack gown a striped onyx in the statue’s glow, Lady Lowell strutted to Henry. “Come now, Henry. You do this every time.”

His eyes enormous, he shuffled from her. Although he didn’t speak, it was obvious he wanted nothing to do with whatever his daughter, her Ladyship and the Maiden were involved in.

Evie’s hackles rose. Henry needed an advocate.

“Dahlia, help me with your father.” The Lady seized one of Henry’s wrists.

Dahlia spun and grabbed the other. Together they hauled him to the Maiden and pressed his hands to her rotund torso. He moaned and struggled to pull away.

Evie punched open the door. “What are you doing?”

Dahlia jumped. Henry’s face clouded.

Only the dowager, coolly holding Henry’s hand on the statue, met Evie’s gaze. “I should think it evident.”

Evie put a fist to her hip. “Henry doesn’t want to touch the Maiden.”

Her onyx and white collar crackled as the Lady lifted her chin. “Henry’s lost the ability to decide what he wants.”

“Does Victor know you’re doing this? I’m certain he’d object.”

Lady Lowell gave her a smug smile. “You’re certain? We’ll find out, won’t we? I had my men fetch him.”

“What?” Evie didn’t bother to hide her shock. “Why?”

“They tell me it took some time to rouse him.” Glancing through Evie, the Lady smirked. “Speak of the devil and he doth appear.”

Behind Evie, a snort sounded. Victor’s angst blasted into Evie’s shoulder blades. She gasped but managed to stay upright. He stomped into the chamber, placing himself as a shield in front of her. “No one is to enter my chambers.”

Excerpt:

Two demon guards clad in black body armor entered the barracks. Their red eyes glowed behind dark face shields. They approached Victor and one guard said, “Get up and come with us.”

All the guards sounded and looked alike. They were even the same height and body structure.

Victor knew better than to refuse. There would be no point in fighting, even if he was so inclined.

He guessed he would be going to one of two possible places. It would either be the punishment chamber because he’d killed Slate too quickly or — and this was more likely — to the demon masters who had bargained with him to kill for their entertainment.

The guards brought Victor out of the barracks and down a steel corridor to an elevator at the end. They boarded it. Except for the soft whir of the elevator descending, there was silence.

It stopped with an almost imperceptible lurch. The door opened and Victor, accompanied by the guards, stepped into a spacious room with an enormous glass ball in the center of it. Several couches surrounded it. While the upholstery resembled leather, Victor’s sense of smell told him the couches were covered with material that hadn’t come from any four-legged animal.

He’d been in this room before. Here, the demons had bargained with him for the lives of his fellow gladiators, their mates, and their cubs. Here, he’d traded his integrity and his soul for their lives.

The guards disappeared into dark corners of the room.

Since he had no intention of sitting on the foul furniture, Victor stood near the glass ball and waited.

The ball glowed faintly at first. Then it brightened. From within, two demon masters — one male and one female — stared at him. He knew they weren’t actually there. The ball was similar to television. He could see and hear them, but they were far away.

The male had ink-black, elbow-length hair. Tall and slim, he was dressed from head to foot in red. The female had short white hair. Her skin was nearly as pale as her form-fitting white dress. Both demons stared at him with black eyes.

“Your game has improved, Victor,” said the male, “but I’m afraid you still haven’t mastered the art of performing. Your kills aren’t entertaining enough, but for now that’s beside the point. We haven’t called you here to critique your style, but for another reason.”

“We have something special planned for you,” the female continued. “There’s a new contender in the tower — one who has seen you fight and wishes to face you in the arena.”

Dark Assassins Book One
by Valerie Ullmer
Genre: Paranormal Romance

There are two words that described Kai.

Remote and Deadly.

And until six months ago, he was fine with that description. But when the vampire assassin spots a curvaceous woman, a human no less, who would come to fill his thoughts, he would gladly shake his persona for a moment in time with her. Instead, he kept his distance, watching out for her and learning more about her every time their paths crossed. But he had yet to speak to her. When a turn of events thrusts her into his solitary life, he must decide whether to complete his assignment, or protect her.

Olivia Sabin had dedicated her life to her work; finding a cure for cancer. She had hidden behind the mask of a scientist who cares little about anything beyond her laboratory, and for a long while she believed it herself. But when a mysterious man came to frequent the diner she visited nightly, her awareness of him devastated her concentration, and she came to look forward to the glimpses of him, however brief.

When she stumbles upon a horrific experiment at work, she knows he’s the only one she can turn to. She’s willing to sacrifice everything in order to protect him and others of his kind from the same fate. But first, she needs to find a way to get him to hear her explanation.

Until she heard his voice.

Xander understands exactly who Frost is the moment he hears her thoughts.  With the help of Kane and Gunnar, they eliminate those in her group as they try to keep her safe.  But during the fight, she is hurt and all of his protective instincts flare to life.  As Xander learns more about her, he realizes that Frost might be the key to the creation of the immortals, both vampire and shifter.

Jade
Dark Assassins Book Four

Jade never wanted a mate. She loved being an assassin and she had a family in her fellow assassins, their mates, and little Silas. She truly had everything she needed. But when Ghost assigned her to track the same immortals who tried to kill Xander’s family, she couldn’t refuse.

But the complication arises when Ghost requests she partner with Noah, a human and ex-special forces soldier. Jade has never worked with a human before, much less one that hated her from the moment he laid eyes on her. But she was a professional and if she could play a part in destroying the immortals who threatened her family, she could accept the human. If only she knew how to fight her attraction to him.

All Noah Hale wanted was to kill the immortals who lured his best friend and fellow ex-Navy SEAL to his death. He had no desire to be teamed with a beautiful tracker who mesmerized him the moment she turned her emerald eyes his way. But in order to stop other soldiers from pursuing the same fate, he needed to swallow his pride and work with a group of immortals he didn’t trust.

As Jade and Noah track the group of shifters through the mountains of Colorado, the danger lurking around every corner threatens everything they both hold close. Will they be able to find a way through, together?

Hunter
Dark Assassins Book Five

Half-vampire and half-shifter.

The one definitive belief panther-shifter Hunter and the other immortals understood about shifters and vampires; vampire venom is deadly to shifters and vice versa. But Hunter never worried about testing the theory because he never wondered if he had a mate, even after a few of his family had found their own. As he and two others stumble upon and eliminate several rogue shifters, part of a larger group determined to kill each of the assassins, Hunter also stumbles upon the one woman destined to be his. There’s only one problem. She’s part vampire.

All alone in the world.

Despite everything, Neri made a life for herself after she escaped from a facility using her as a test subject. She has no past, no family, and no connections to the world as far as she can remember. She stays to herself and finds a routine, telling herself she isn’t lonely. But everything changes when she spots Hunter and her first true memory revealed. He was there the day someone injected her with an experimental drug and changed into this cold being.

As Neri and Hunter navigate their newfound relationship, their journey becomes even more complicated when they learn Neri’s venom is deadly to shifters. But with help from the other immortals, Hunter and Neri reveal her past and realize the extent of the threat Dark Company has been dealing with for years.

But can their relationship survive with so much stacked against them?

To his delight one of them contains what he hopes will bring an end to his loneliness and heartache. As he prepares to cast an ancient prayer spell to the god of love, across town Ethan Goss decides that moving to a new apartment will ease his broken heart.

With the help of an eccentric real estate agent, gorgeous Ethan goes to a viewing in the block where Luke lives.

When Luke meets Ethan in the lobby, it’s the start of a passionate love affair.

Fate hasn’t finished with the two handsome men—will true happiness evade them both?

#gayromance with an edge of paranormal

In the lobby, Victor stopped walking. “I should show you the garden, but I need the key for the gate. It’s in my car. Wait here a moment.” He strode rapidly out of the front doors.

Ethan checked out the table in the foyer where mail sat in three neat stacks. One stack had a lot, the others not much at all. Ethan couldn’t help reading the names on the envelopes. As his gaze traveled over the addresses, someone clattered down the polished hardwood stairs.

Ethan turned to the footsteps.

A young man glanced up from watching where his feet fell. His blue eyes locked with Ethan’s stare.

Ethan gazed at him, and his stomach lurched. His heart pounded. Not one word would form in his mind other than, wow.

The young man smiled, approaching the table. “Hi. I’m collecting my snail mail—yeah, not much as usual.”

Through a daze of attraction, Ethan watched the man pick up the two envelopes in his stack. He looked the young man up and down, taking in his hard body and fashionably cut dark hair. He held back a sigh of appreciation as the man turned to him.

“Are you the new tenant?” He waved a hand at the apartment door.

His low voice traveled over Ethan like a glaze of melting honey. Ethan stared at the man’s handsome face. He is gorgeous. About my age, too. “I haven’t taken the place yet, just…just viewed it.”

The young man moved closer. “You should take it. There aren’t many places as good, big, and with a garden this close to the city.” He held out his hand. “Luke Kirby. I live on the third floor, but that’s my patch of garden next to yours, if you take the place. It might seem odd to have to trundle down the stairs to sit in the sun with my coffee, but I’ve grown used to it.” His eyes sparkled at Ethan. He held Ethan’s gaze as he talked.

Butterflies filled Ethan’s stomach. He couldn’t stop his heart hammering and wondered if he could actually speak, meeting Luke had such an effect on him. “Ethan Goss.” He shook Luke’s hand. What he felt like doing was pulling the guy close and kissing those perfect lips that moved again.

“Pleased to meet you.” Luke held on to Ethan’s hand. His eyes held something unspoken.

A wave of longing rose through Ethan. His loneliness and need for sex put an ache in his stomach, replacing the butterflies. He glanced down at the strong hand gripping his, wondering if he could hold on a little longer, despite how weird that might be. Better not, that’s kinda creepy. All the same, it wasn’t Ethan who abandoned the handshake.

Luke let go but trailed his fingertips along Ethan’s palm as he withdrew his hand.

With his skin tingling from the touch, Ethan gazed into Luke’s blue eyes and knew. He’s gay. He somehow knows I am, too—probably the way I’m ogling him. He’s interested in me. Thank you, god. Ethan flashed his eyes at Luke with a flirtatious expression he usually reserved for cute guys he met in the gay bar.
